The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is a prestigious national-level examination that assesses comprehensive understanding of various undergraduate subjects in Engineering, Technology, Science, Commerce, Arts, Architecture, and Humanities. GATE 2027 is being organized by IIT Madras and will be conducted on 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 & 21 February 2027. The examination is jointly organized by IISc Bangalore and all IITs on behalf of the National Coordination Board (NCB), Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, Government of India.

Eligibility Criteria for GATE 2027

Before applying for GATE 2027, candidates must ensure they meet the eligibility requirements. GATE 2027 has comprehensive eligibility criteria that accommodate students from various academic backgrounds.

Who is Eligible for GATE 2027?

  • Candidates currently in the 3rd or higher year of any undergraduate degree programme
  • Candidates who have completed any government-approved degree programme in Engineering, Technology, Science, Architecture, Commerce, Arts, or Humanities
  • There is no age limit for appearing in GATE 2027

GATE 2027 Exam Pattern

Understanding the GATE 2027 exam pattern is crucial for effective preparation. The examination follows a structured format designed to assess both subject knowledge and general aptitude.

Question Paper Structure

  • Mode / Language: Computer Based Test (CBT) in English
  • Total Marks: 100 marks
  • Total Questions: 65 questions
  • Duration: 3 hours (180 minutes)
  • Sections: General Aptitude (15 marks) + Subject-specific paper (85 marks)
  • Engineering Mathematics: 13 marks within subject for most engineering papers (AE, AG, BM, BT, CE, CH, CS, EC, EE, ES, IN, ME, MN, MT, NM, PE, PI). Not applicable in the same way for AR, CY, DA, EY, GE, GG, MA, PH, RA, ST, XH, XL.

Types of Questions in GATE 2027

  • Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ): Four options, one correct. Carry 1 or 2 marks. Negative marking: −1/3 (1-mark), −2/3 (2-mark).
  • Multiple Select Questions (MSQ): Four options, one or more correct. No negative marking; no partial credit.
  • Numerical Answer Type (NAT): Enter a real number using the virtual keypad. No choices. No negative marking.

GATE 2027 Test Papers & Subjects

GATE 2027 will be conducted for 30 test papers. A new paper Robotics & Automation (RA) has been introduced. Textile Engineering & Fibre Science is now sectional paper XE9 (not a standalone TF paper). Candidates can appear in one or two papers (allowed combinations only).

Important: Candidates can appear in one or two papers. Only selected two-paper combinations are allowed — see the GATE 2027 information brochure and application portal when choosing papers.

GATE 2027 Syllabus

The GATE 2027 syllabus covers comprehensive topics for each of the 30 papers. The syllabus is designed to test the comprehensive understanding of undergraduate-level subjects. Each paper has a specific syllabus that outlines the topics and subtopics that will be covered in the examination.

GATE 2027 Online Application Process

The GATE Online Application Processing System (GOAPS) opens on 14 August 2026. Regular registration closes on 21 September 2026, and extended registration (with late fee) closes on 30 September 2026. DigiLocker registration is mandatory for all Indian nationals — create or update a verified DigiLocker account before applying.

GATE 2027 Application Fee (per test paper):

  • Female / SC / ST / PwD: ₹1,000 (regular) · ₹1,500 (extended)
  • All Other Candidates: ₹2,000 (regular) · ₹2,500 (extended)
  • Two papers: Fee is exactly double the single-paper fee
